Model Outline of Technical Description of an Object

A technical description has three main sections:

Section I

INTRODUCTION

· This section consists of four main content:

A Definition of the object

Write a sentence definition of the product, could be the one taken from other sources.

B Purpose of the object

Clarify the purpose if it is not obvious from the definition

C Overall description of the object

Describe the overall appearance: a sense of size, shape, and colour, weight, etc.

D Main parts

List the main parts in the order

Section II

Description of Main Parts

· Description of an object is explained according to its part/division; thus, the uses of sub-headings for each part are recommended.

· Each sub-heading consists of:

A A formal definition and the physical details of each major and minor parts – a specific organizational pattern, such as spatial or chorological.

B Details needed to understand what the parts look like and how they are connected

C Graphic illustrations of the individual parts or drawings

· Sample of its presentation:

A Main part 1

1. Definition of main part 1

2. Purpose of main part 1

3. Details of main part 1 – colour, shape, measurements, etc.

4. Connection to main part 2 OR list of minor parts of main part 1

5. Minor part 1 (if relevant)

a Definition of minor

b Purpose of minor

c Details of minor

6. Minor part 2 (if relevant)

(Repeat the same step)

B Main part 2

(Repeat the same step)

Section III

Conclusion

· This section presents on

A How parts work together

Provide conclusions that explain how the parts work together and what a typical cycle of an operation is like

B How object operates

Provide the reader or user on the specific features of the object (for the purpose of the intended use only)

The Kitchen King toaster, Model 49D

Section I

INTRODUCTION

The Kitchen King toaster, Model 49D, is an electric appliance that browns bread between electric coils inside a metal body. The toaster also heats and browns frozen and packaged foods designed especially to fit in the vertical heating wells of a toaster. The Kitchen King model 49D is 6 ¾ in. high, 4 ½ in. wide, 8 ¾ in. long, and weighs 2 lb. There are three main parts: the base, the cord, and the housing.

Section II

DESCRIPTION OF MAIN PARTS

A The Base

The base is a flat stainless steel plate, 4 ½ in. wide and 8 ¾ in. long. It supports the housing of the toaster and is nailed to it at all four corners. The base rests on four rounds, black, plastic feet, each ½ in. high and ¾ in. in diameter. The feet are attached to the base ½ in. inside the four corners. The front and back of the base (2 ½ in. wide) are edged in black plastic strips that protrude ¾ in. past the base. A removable stainless steel plate, 3 ½ in. wide and 5 ¼ in. long, called the crumb tray is hinged. The opposite side has a catch that allows the hinged plate to swing open for removal of trapped crumbs.

B The Cord

The cord is an insulated cable that conducts electric current to the heating mechanism inside the body of the toaster. It is 32 in. long and 1/8 in. in diameter. Attached to the base of the toaster at the back, it enters the housing through an opening just large enough for the cable. At the other end of the cord is a two-terminal plug, measuring 1 in. long, ¾ in. wide, and ½ in. thick. The two prongs are ½ in. apart and are each 5/8 in. long, ¼ in. wide, and 1/16 in. thick. The plug must be attached to an electrical outlet before the toaster is operable.

A Housing

The housing is a stainless steel boxlike cover that contains the electric heating mechanism and in which the toasting process takes place. The housing is 8 ¾ in. long, 6 ¼ in. high, and 4 ½ in. wide. The front and back are edged at the top with black plastic strips that protrude past the housing ¾ in. The housing also contains two heating wells and two control levers.

B Heating Wells

The heating wells are vertical compartments, 5 ½ in. long, 1 ¼ in. wide, 5 ¾ in. deep. The wells are lined with electric coils that brown the bread or toaster food when the mechanism is activated. Inside each heating well is a platform on which the toast rests and which moves up and down the vertical length of the well.

C Control Levers

The control levers are square pieces of black plastic attached to springs that regulate the heating and the degree of browning. The levers are 1 ½ in. square and are on the front of the toaster.

D Heat Control Lever

The heat control lever is centred 1 in. from the top of the housing and is attached to the platforms inside both heating wells. When the lever is pushed down, it moves along a vertical slot to the base of the toaster, lowering the platforms inside the heating wells. This movement also triggers the heating coils.

E Browning Lever

The browning lever is located in the lower right corner on the front of the toaster. The browning lever moves horizontally along a 2 –in. slot. The slot is marked with three positions: dark, medium, and light. This lever controls the length of time the heating mechanism is in operation and, therefore, the degree of brownness that will result.

Section III

CONCLUSION

The user must insert the cord into a 120-volt AC electrical outlet to begin the operating cycle. Next, the user inserts one or two pieces of bread or toaster food into the heating wells, moves the browning lever to the desired setting, and lowers the heat control lever until it catches and activates the heating mechanism. The toaster will turn off automatically when the heating cycle is complete, and the platforms in the heating wells will automatically raise the bread or toasted food, so the user can remove it easily.
